Thoughts on Cody Green's departure

This afternoon, ESPN's Joe Schad tweeted that Nebraska backup QB Cody Green will be leaving the team and looking to transfer. The local media quickly confirmed the report, with Sean Callahan of Huskers Illustrated commenting that "I was told Green didn't feel like he was a fit in Tim Beck's new offense."

When Cody Green came to Nebraska as a four star recruit, expectations were high. They got even higher his freshman year as Zac Lee faltered and Green showed great speed and flashes of solid potential. Unfortunately, they remained just that: flashes. This year, Green struggled as Taylor Martinez's backup, consistently missing throws and fumbling at an alarmingly high rate.

Those things aren't solely Green's fault. Head coach Bo Pelini and offensive coordinator Shawn Watson often set him up for failure. He regularly had to come into situations where the team had horrible field position and was behind, leading the offense to throw much more than usual. I'm not to take all the responsibility off Green - he made some bad decisions and poor throws that were more than just pressure and jitters - but he was often coming into tough situations with no chance to get into any sort of rhythm.

Compare that to the two games he started this year against Iowa State and Colorado. In those games, he put up a completion percentage of 68% while throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for one more. He did fumble three times, but the Huskers recovered all three, so it didn't hurt them.

I don't blame Green for leaving the team, and I wish him the best. With any luck, he'll land at a mid major or a lesser school in a good conference and have a chance to fulfill at least some of his potential.
