Nate Robinson wins third dunk contest

Lackluster.

That's the best description I can think of for the 2010 NBA Dunk Contest. In recent years we've seen great theatrics and impressive dunks from Nate Robinson and Dwight Howard, but both were severely lacking in this year's contest.

This year, the field featured Robinson along with Gerald Wallace of the Charlotte Bobcats, who last competed in 2001, and two first-timers - Lakers guard Shannon Brown and Raptors forward DeMar DeRozen.

The three challengers all chose to play it safe early on, doing relatively simple dunks that won't win contests anytime soon. Robinson took a little more risk, but chose to just do enough to get into the finals. The one sign of creativity came from DeRozen's second dunk, which featured a high degree of difficulty as teammate Sonny Weems threw an alley-oop off the side of the backboard.
One would expect the two to reach for some more exciting dunks in the finals, but it never materialized. The one attempt to go all out had to be aborted because Robinson simply couldn't get high enough to get over the rim.

The last two dunk contests left observers excited and seemed to re-energize the competition. This year was a major step backward. It's going to take something major for the contest to regain it's glory. Something like Lebron James.
